Acts 7:57 – 8:3 — True & false witnesses for God at Stephen’s execution

Martyrs are commonly thought to be people who suffer or die for their beliefs, but the core meaning of martyr is one who is careful and bears witness. Not only does Stephen model Messiah Yeshua’s teaching in death, but also do the faithful witnesses show how the people of God properly show His power in how they react to persecution.

Food for thought from the recorded discussion

How did the events of Stephen’s stoning differ from the process laid out for the Sanhedrin in the Mishna?

Who was Saul? Why was he there?

What is a martyr? How does that relate to Stephen’s testimony? Who were the false witnesses of God? Who were the true witnesses of God?

What does Isa. 29:13 tell us about the “kangaroo court” Stephen experienced? What was Stephen’s final testimony immediately before his death? How is this similar to what Yeshua said in Matt. 5:43?

Who was given the charge to sanction Stephen’s killing?

What does the Greek word ekklesia mean?

What does Micah 7:2 tell us about the real meaning of devotion? What does this tell us about Stephen and those who buried him? What does Micah tell us about those who killed Stephen?
