The apostle Paul uses the object lesson of purging leaven out of the home for the Feast of Unleavened Bread in one of his most shocking statements on discipline for immorality in the congregation in Corinth — purge out "malice" and "wickedness."
Food for thought from the recorded discussion
What does the Feast of Unleavened Bread represent (Exodus 12-13; Matt 13:33; Matt. 16:6,11-12; Mark 8:15; Luke 12:1; Luke 13:21; Gal. 5:1-15)? Why is unleavened bread called the "bread of affliction" (Deut. 16:3)? What would have happened if Messiah Yeshua hadn’t taken on "affliction" for us (Isa. 53:7)? How do we live as a result of His suffering on our behalf? What affliction comes our way by living that way?
1st Corinthians 5 — Is the assembly of Messiah for sinners or the righteous? How is the answer to this question related to the tolerance of immorality Paul was chastising the Corinthian congregation for in 1st Cor. 5:1-2? How can Paul say he "judged" the immoral man in 1st Cor. 5:3, when Yeshua said, "Do not judge, or you will be judged" (Matt. 7:1)? Why does Paul call the assembly to "deliver such a one to Satan" (1st Cor. 5:5)? How are the hearers of Paul’s letter already "unleavened" (1st Cor. 5:7)?
1st Cor. 5:8 — Consider the definitions of sincerity, truth, malice and wickedness. How do you find out how God defines those words? Why does the world glorify evil and say it’s "cool"? Why does our world say it’s not cool to be good? One definition of wickedness is "being ashamed to keep the law." What is God’s love compared to the common perceptions of "love"? How should we respond to God’s discipline? How is this connected to David’s statement, "Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me" (Psa. 23:4)?
1st Cor. 14:18-21 — Should we try to understand evil?
Prov. 1:1-7 — What is the first think one must do to become enlightened? What was the first thing the newly freed people of Israel encountered at Mt. Sinai (Exodus 19)? Why was that necessary?
Col. 3:1-3 — What does it mean to be "hidden in Messiah" (Col. 3:3)? How do we determine what God considers "abominable"?
Titus 3:1-3 — Do we follow the commands of evil rulers, such as Hitler?
1st Peter 2:1-3,6,9 — What "pure milk of the word" is Peter referring to? How has God called us out of "darkness" into "light"? What was the symbolism of Israel’s leaving Egypt on a full moon (15th day of the lunar month; Exodus 12)?
Rom. 1:14-20 — How does the teaching that the theory of evolution explains the origins of the universe make God into a liar (Rom. 1:18-20)?
Matt. 6:31-34
Ex. 20:4-6 — Who can end the judgment of God on one generation after another? What is an "image"?
Ex. 28:38 — The Messiah, pictured by the high priest, is the one who takes away our iniquity.
Ex. 34:6-10 — Who clears the penalty of death required by all who are guilty of sin, transgression and iniquity? What is the "fearful thing" that the LORD will perform (Ex. 34:10)?
Num. 5:29-31 — What did Paul say marriage was a representation of (2nd Cor. 11:2)? If the bride of Messiah compromises the covenant, what happens to the guilt? Where does repentance come into the situation? Does this passage in Numbers refer to a repentant wife? How does this speak to followers of Messiah who advocate the disregarding of God’s law?
