Beginning Biblical Hebrew 2

Mondays, Jan. 6–March 10, 2025, 5–6 p.m. Pacific Time

This 10-week class from TorahResource Learning Center (founded by Tim Hegg) is the second of a three-quarter sequence in Biblical Hebrew. Students will review key vocabulary and learn new words, starting with verbs, leading to reading and composing short sentences in Hebrew. By the end of the quarter students will be reading more sections from the book of Genesis. The prerequisite taking the first quarter of the series or instructor permission — and a desire to learn and a commitment to completing the weekly assignments.

This class incorporates a wide range of teaching tools to give the student a good grasp of the Hebrew language and handle the biblical texts. Students will be able to go through the textbook (available as a PDF download) then take their knowledge to live online classes every week with instructor Rob Vanhoff, M.A.

During the live classes, students will be able to ask questions and will read through various texts of the Bible asking questions and getting a better understanding of the text while reading.

Note: Live classes will take place on Mondays, 5–6 p.m. Pacific Time. Although classes will be recorded for those who are not able to attend, students are required to attend a minimum of 6 live classes in order to pass the course.

Alternative: ‘Natural approach’ course

Aleph With Beth is a YouTube channel devoted to teaching biblical Hebrew in a method parallel to the “natural approach” to language learning “developed by Stephen Krashen and Tracy Terrell in the late 1970s and early 1980s.”1

The natural approach is total immersion, meaning there will be little to no translation of what’s going on and scant explanation of how Hebrew works. The idea is that the learner figures out what is going on along the way, similar to how children learn. Yet the God-given ability to absorb languages wanes after the first few years of life, making the process of learning a new tongue more challenging for adults.

Here’s how Beth explains it:
