The book of Deuteronomy is full of contrasts: blessings and curses, exile and regathering. In this book we learn about the heart of God and how He wants to win the devotion of our hearts.

A pattern throughout the Bible is:

  • God does something.
  • Man fails.
  • God delivers.

Does Deuteronomy contain the words of Moshe (Moses) or the words of God?

What are commandments?

  • They are directions and orders.

What are statutes?

  • They are carved in stone.
  • Apostle Peter called us living stones (1st Peter 2:4-6).

What are judgments?

  • They are decisions to help us carry out the statutes.

Synopsis of key chapters and concepts

Deuteronomy 4 — stone

Deuteronomy 5 — heart of stone vs. heart of flesh [Editor: The audio recording begins here.]

Deuteronomy 6 — Sh’ma Yisrael! Hear and obey, Israel!

Deuteronomy 8 — purpose for trials and difficulties

Deuteronomy 10 — This is what God requires of man: teach the children about the LORD.

Deuteronomy 18

  • The “middle chapter” of the book and containing a peak in meaning.
  • In Deut. 18:15-20, what is the “Word of God”? What does the Word of God do?

Deuteronomy 29

  • What was the purpose for the 40 years of Israel’s wandering between Egypt and Canaan? At what point did Israel fail, and what did that show?
  • Why doesn’t God want us to love Him specifically with our bodies? Does that mean God doesn’t care what we do with our bodies?

Deuteronomy 33

  • When will God be “riding on the clouds” (Deut. 33:26; Dan. 7:13; Luke 21:20-28)?
  • When was ancient Israel “taught the gospel”?
