Who Was or Is Melchizedek?

Commentators claim that Melchizedek (seen in Genesis 14) was just a man. Why then do the Psalms and the letter to the Hebrews connect Melchizedek to the Messiah and to Yeshua?

Food for thought from the recorded discussion

Passages about Melchizedek: Gen. 14:18; Psa. 110:4; Hebrews 5-7

What year did come up with disparate languages? (338 after the flood)

How many years after the flood was Abram called? (375 after the flood)

In the year 375 after the flood Abram was 75 years old. When Abram went to war against the kings of Shinar, he was age 85.

Who were the sons of Melchizedek (Joshua 10)?

Jewish commentators said yes his name is Melchizedek just like Balaam was a prophet to the heathen then Melchizedek was a priest to the Canaanites. Jewish commentators think Melchizedek was Shem and lost his priesthood because he didn’t bless God before blessing Abram.

Hebrews said that Melchezedek had neither father nor mother. Wouldn’t the author had missed that Melchizedek was Shem?

What does Scripture say about righteousness? Who among men is righteous? Was Melchizedek a sinner?

Christian scholars do not want to acknowledge that Melchizedek was anything other than a human because everyone has ancestors and descendants. Why did the author of Hebrews say that Melchizedek had no beginning or ending of days? Why doesn’t Genesis in its meticulous relating of ages of people not mention Melchizedek? Shem lived 602 years, and his son lived 480 years, and his grandson 433 years and great-grandson live 464 years.

The letter to the Hebrews said that Yeshua’s scepter is righteousness (Heb. 1:8) and peace. What does Yeshua take to the Creator, your sins?

Is Melchizedek  Melchizedek a priest forever and Yeshua a priest forever both priests forever?

Mal. 4:2 — Why did Malachi say “sun of righteousness” rather than “son”? Who is the “light of the world”? How is healing related to light and righteousness? Why is the Messiah foretold here as the sun and not the moon? If it were written “son of righteousness” then wouldn’t the “father of righteousness” be Melchizedek?

Melchizedek in the Dead Sea Scrolls (11Q13, col. 2) — How did the author of Hebrews use this imagery of the coming of Melchizedek on a Jubilee, which comes on Yom haKippurim, the Day of Atonement? (“The Coming of Melchizedek” Quoted by The Gnostic Society Library. <http://www.gnosis.org/library/commelc.htm> Accessed Feb. 14, 2009.)

What was the name of the king of Sodom?

If Yeshua was called the “Son of God,” why wasn’t Melchizedek called that?

Why does the author of Hebrews call Melchizedek the priest of the Most High God and not the Most High Himself? In John 17, Yeshua said He had told His disciples the Name of the Father.

Mic. 5:2 — The “going forth” of Messiah will be of old.

If Melchizedek were the same as Yeshua, does that explain the change of salvation from one form to another?

Why do some in the Messianic movement want to toss out the letter to the Hebrews? What essential knowledge of God is in that letter?

When was Yeshua before Abraham (John 8:58)?

Did the Melchizedek priesthood ever stop (Psa. 110:4)? Why was the Aaronic priesthood instituted? What are the pictures of that second priesthood pointing? Were Melchizedek or Yeshua qualified by lineage to be part of the Aaronic priesthood?

Did the author of Hebrews have a “Greek mindset” because he quoted from the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Scriptures?
