Followers of Messiah have long meditated on seven “oracles” in Luke 1–2 that were recited by the Angel Gabriel, Miriam, Elisheba, Zakharyah, and Shimon. We are going to meditate on them today and next time.
Thought Questions
- Who is the forerunner of the forerunner of the Lord?
- What scripture references does the Angel Gabriel use when speaking to Zakharyah (Mal. 3:1,4:5-6; Isa. 40:1-5)?
- What scripture references does the Angel Gabriel use when speaking to Miriam (Gen. 16:11; 2 Sam. 7:9-16; Psa. 2:7; 1 Kings 2:12; Psa. 132:11; Isa. 9:7)?
- Why is it important to understand the history of the Tanak (such as the history of the people of Edom) to understand what is spoken in this chapter?
- What is the “zeal of the Lord”?
- What scripture references does Elisheba use when speaking to Miriam (Judges 5:4; Gen. 3:15; Gen. 22:15-18; Gal. 3:16)?
- How was this promise fulfilled in its promised time?
- What scripture references does Miriam use in her song of praise a.k.a. The Magnificat in Luke 1:46–55. (1st Sam. 2:1; Hab. 3:18; 1 Sam. 1:11; Gen. 29:32; Ps. 136:12)?
- What scripture references does Zakharyah use in his song (Psa. 111:9; Psa. 25:6; Mal. 4:2)?
- Who is the “door”?
- How can the “pictures” in scripture get in the way of the reality of God’s message to His people?
