Torah is Hebrew for “instruction.” It refers to the first five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus and Deuteronomy. The Hebrew names for the books are Beresheet (“in the beginning”), Shemot (“names”), Vayiqra (“and He called”) and Devarim (“words”).

The Torah is the foundational part of the Hebrew Bible, which is referred to by its Hebrew acronym TaNaKh: Torah, Nevi’im (Prophets) and Ketuvim (Writings).
