Genesis 2:17-25 — ‘in dying you shall die’; woman the ‘helper’

The LORD God warns Adam about the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and decides that Adam needs a “helper.”

Food for thought from the recorded discussion

We discussed several different subjects in verses 1-7 and 8-17: Sabbath, garden, rivers, knowledge of good and evil.

We will discuss the “knowledge of good and evil” from Gen. 2:17 more when we get to Genesis 3. The Hebrew word translated evil, ra' ra’ (Strong’s Hebrew lexicon No. 7451), is derived from the verb ra'a ra’a’ (Strong’s 7489), which is translated as to be evil or to break, shatter.

Gen. 2:17 — “you will surely die” in Hebrew is mmeno mowt t'mowt, literally translated is “in dying you shall die.”

Gen. 3:3-41 — Satan used the exact phrase that God told Adam in Genesis 3 when he was speaking with Eve.

When God created Adam out of the earth, was Adam to never grow up?

Gen. 2:18 — The LORD God said it was “not good for man to be alone.” Did God make a mistake in making Adam by himself? What does it mean to “be alone” (bad bad, Strong’s 905)?

What does it mean to help, as in the Hebrew word 'ezer ‘ezer translated as helper or help-meet (Strong’s 5828)?

Gen. 2:5 — What does the word “before” terem terem, Strong’s 2962) mean? What does it mean for the woman to be “before” the man? See also Gen. 31:37?

Gen. 2:23 — What does it mean when Adam called Eve “bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh” ('etsem m'etsemi ‘etsem m’etsemi, Strong’s 6106)?

Gen. 2:20 — What does the Hebrew word translated as cattle mean (behemah behemah, Strong’s 929)? What does the word beast mean? What is a beast and how do one differ from man?  What does the Hebrew word translated fowl ('uwf ‘uwf, Strong’s 5775) literally mean? What do the birds of the air cover? How does God cover His people like an eagle?

Gen. 2:21 — Why did God put Adam into a deep sleep? What did God take from Adam to make Eve? The Hebrew word translated rib is tseleh tseleh (Strong’s 6763)? The original verb form of the word is thought to mean to curve.

Gen. 2:25 — “… were naked and not ashamed.” We’ll elaborate on naked ('arowm ‘arowm, Strong’s 6174) and ashamed (buwsh buwsh, Strong’s 954) next week. It’s not a mistake that this chapter ends like this because it’s a teaser for Genesis 3.
