God has weekly, monthly and seasonal appointments — mo’edim in Hebrew or “appointed times” (Lev. 23:2) — with His people in addition to the prayer times each day.

  • Periodic
    • Shabbat (Sabbath): Every seventh day of the week (Saturday)
    • Rosh Chodesh (New Moon): Beginning of each lunar month
    • Jubilee (Year of Freedom): Every 50 years
    • Shemitah (Sabbatical year): Every seven years
  • Spring festivals: 1st lunar month (Abib; March–April) & 3rd lunar month (Sivan; May–June)
    • Pesakh (Passover): end of the 14th day of 1st month
    • Matzot (Feast of Unleavened Bread): 15th–21st day of 1st month
    • Bikkurim (Wave Offering or Firstfruits): 16th day of 1st month
    • Shavuot (Festival of Weeks or Pentecost): 6th day of 3rd month
  • Fall festivals: 7th lunar month (Tishrei; September–October)
  • Not commanded, but special
    • Chanukah (Festival of Dedication): 8 days starting 25th day of 9th lunar month (Kislev; November–December)
    • Purim (Feast of Lots): 14th day of 12th lunar month (Adar; February–March)
