Genesis 1:2 — ‘and darkness’

What is the big deal about “light” and “darkness” at the beginning of the heavens and the earth in Genesis 1? How is that connected to the light and darkness Yeshua (Jesus), the prophets and the apostles talk about in connection to people?

Food for thought from the recorded discussion

The first words in the Bible not only tell history but show the future. God did not want the world to be in darkness and confusion, so God sent the Messiah to be a light to the world and give the world hope through His resurrection.

How is the Hebrew word for “darkness” (khoshekh, khoshekh, Strong’s No. 2822) used in the Bible?

Light can not have communication with darkness. God designed the day to begin with darkness, and then it becomes light (Gen. 1:5).

1st Sam. 2:9 — There’s silence in darkness.

Job 15: 20-30 — The future of the wicked is darkness. “There is no peace for the wicked” (Isa. 48:22). People without God will try to hide themselves from Him in fear.

Ps. 18:28 — God “lights” our “candle,” i.e. our life. He is our light in the darkness

Ps. 35:4-6 — How did the earth get into darkness?

Prov. 2:11 — “Who walks in the way of darkness?”

Prov. 20:20 — “Who curses parents? His ‘lamp’ put into darkness.” Yeshua said in Rev. 2:5 that if there’s no repentance, He will remove their candlestick.

Isaiah 5:20. — Who will put darkness for light and light for darkness and bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter? We are told not to make the light of God into darkness. How is sin made “holy” and holiness made into “sin” or evil in today’s world”? Is there an example for us in the modern world’s reaction to the word “obedience”?

Isaiah 45:7 — “I form light and create darkness, make peace and create evil.” How did God “create” darkness? The Bible tells us that blessings and curses come from God. Did God create sin? Where will the demonic powers be condemned? Has the LORD removed light from the Adversary? How is darkness related to the second death? (Rev. 2:2, Rev. 20:6, Rev. 20:14, Rev. 21:8)

Amos 5:18-20 — Amos discusses “The Day of the LORD” as “darkness and not light”. Who is the audience of Amos’ message? How is this realted to the darkness that fell on Yeshua when he died (Matt. 27:45; Mark 15:33; Luke 23:44)?

How did the Adversary (haSatan) turn the light of God at the beginning into darkness?

Amos 5:21-27 — How is this curse related to the corruptions under Yeroboam (Jeroboam) and not related to the feasts of the LORD (Leviticus 23)? Which part of Israel was sent “into exile and beyond”? Were they the House of Israel or the House of Yehudah (Judah)? How is Amos’ prophesy related to Hosea’s comments?

Matt. 6:21-23 — ” if the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness?”

2nd Cor. 4:1-6 — God commanded the light to shine from the darkness. Yeshua said when light comes will go towards or flee from it (John 10:5). John said when the light came, the darkness could not overcome it (John 1:5). Yeshua said He overcame the world.

1st Thess. 5:1-11 — Why didn’t Paul need to teach the Thessalonians “regarding times and seasons”? What then is the darkness in which Messiah comes like a thief? What does a thief do to the place he burgled? Are God’s children the children of light or the children of darkness? In Genesis, is God bringing light to a world in darkness?

Isaiah 14 — Yeshua told His disciples he saw Lucifer fall, cast down from heaven down to this world. If men like Yosef and Aharon can be pictures of Messiah, why can’t the King of Tyre and the King of Babylon be pictures of the Adversary?

How do “the foundations of the earth” differ from “the creation of the earth”?
