Genesis 50: Yosef does not take revenge after his father dies

Two patriarchs die in this chapter. It starts with the death of Yisra’el (Ya’akov) and ends with the death of Yosef.

After Yisra’el died, Yosef became, for all intents and purposes, the elder brother of the family. However, the brothers wondered whether Yosef’s forgiveness was only skin deep or whether it went all the way to his core.

When the brothers realized the depths of Yosef’s love and forgiveness they make a vow to him, which their descendants fulfilled 200 years later.

Thought questions

  • How did the people of Mitzraim “embalm” Yisra’el’s body?
  • How did the ancients actually “embalm” the dead (Song of Solomon 2:13)?
  • How long did Yosef mourn his father?
  • How long did it take them to embalm Yisra’el?
  • How long did it take the people of Mitzraim to mourn Yisra’el?
  • Why is the number 40 important?
