What we see in this story are the actions of God, not the actions of the people. We can learn a lot about God if we just read the story carefully. In this passage, rocks play an important role and are important symbols of God at work. First was the rock Moshe sits on raising his arms during the daylong battle with Amalek. 1st Samuel 29-30 — David is rebuffed by Philistia in fighting Israel but he rescues his wives

David volunteers to follow the Philistines into war but the Philistine leaders rebuke him and send him away. David remains in favor with Achish as he leaves the Philistines in peace and they battle the Israelites on their own. This release from service was a blessing because David had to rescue his wives and family as well as the families of his men from the raiding Amalekites. [read more]

1st Samuel 15 — Saul disobeys the LORD’s command to annihilate Amalek

Saul is given another test by the LORD but Saul doesn’t know it was his final test. Saul’s acquiescence to peer pressure became his downfall and Samuel tells Saul that the kingdom will be given to another. [read more]
