Joshua 1: Yehoshua needs courage to fill Moshe’s big shoes

Moshe (Moses) led God’s people, Israel, out of slavery in Egypt amid mighty events, dealt with continual backbiting and backstabbing from the people in return and taught the people God’s Word. Now, Moshe is dead, and Yehoshua (Joshua), his right-hand man through most of it, is in charge. How does he and God handle the transition?

Food for thought from the recorded discussion

What events have already happened before Yehoshua (Joshua) takes over (see Numbers 21)?

Which of the kings east of the Yarden River (Jordan) attacked Israel when asked to pass through?

What three tribes were reminded of their promise to back entrance into the promised land if allowed to settle on the other side of the Jordan?

Why did Yehoshua need encouragement like this when Moshe (Moses)  didn’t?

How is Yehoshua a prophet? What do prophets never do with the Torah? Why not?

What are the two types of prophets? How did their form of revelation affect their ministry?

What is the job description of a prophet? Do they hold that job forever? Why does that effect how Daniel is viewed as a prophet v. Isaiah or Jeremiah?

Given these definitions of a prophet, was Joshua a prophet? What barriers did he tear down? How did God’s command to “be strong and courageous” have to do with those barriers?

What did the new generation see as they were growing that affected the transistion between Moshe and Yehoshua?

How successful was Yehoshua in conveying his strength and courage to the people over his lifetime?

Why did Moshe rename Yehoshua? What did Moshe see in his life?

Why did Yehoshua not occupy the land promised to him as it was promised to Abraham? Which Yehoshua will occupy it?

Who were the two people to get the title “servant of God”? What does that title entail according to the examples shown in the Bible?

  1. No will of one’s own
  2. No authority of one’s own
  3. No legal status of one’s own
  4. Totally subservient to God
  5. Highest position any man can hold in God’s eyes

How do angels fit into these definitions?

Why do so few people rise to this position?
