Deuteronomy 33: Future promises for all of Israel

Moses, “the man of God,” passes along cryptic blessings to each tribe of Israel — well, almost all of them. These blessings reach down through time to be still in our future and not possible to be fulfilled without all the tribes united, including Yehudah (Judah, a.k.a. the Jews).

Food for thought from the discussion

Why is Moshe called “the man of God” (Deut. 33:1; see also Josh. 14:6)? Why special relationship did he have with God?

What happened at Sinai (Deut. 33:2)? On what day of the year did that happen? Why was the timing so important?

Where was Seir and Paran? Where did God lead Israel as they were approaching the land? Who were those peoples in those nations? Why did God take Israel out of the blessed land of Goshen in Egypt and march them into the land of their enemies?

Who are the “holy ones” (Deut. 33:2)? How did they become holy?

Some translations have “love” in Deut. 33:3. What does the Hebrew word translated as such mean?

Who was the king, the “upright one” (Deut. 33:5)? Who was the “upright one” or the maker of righteousness at the time of Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) (Matt. 3:3)?

What was Moshe going to tell the leaders of Israel (Deut. 33:5)? What were the leaders, the elders, supposed to do in the assembly of God’s people?

When will all the blessings of Deuteronomy 29-33 going to come to pass? Can the blessings come to the tribes if they are apart from the whole of Israel? If any of the gates were missing from the new Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) would the city of God be complete (Rev. 21:12-14)?

What kind of life was Reuben to live (Deut. 33:6)? When will this happen? What does this mean for the rest of the tribes?

Why isn’t Shimon (Simeon) mentioned among the tribes to be blessed? What did Yosef (Joseph) to do Shimon when Yosef was prime minister of Mitzraim (Egypt) and his brothers came to him to buy food (Gen. 42:24)? Why is Shimon mentioned among the tribes in Rev. 7:1-12 and not Dan, which is mentioned in Deut. 33:22-25?

Why is Yehudah (Judah) to be brought to his people (Deut. 33:7)? Why whom does the story of Yosef begin (Gen. 37:26)? Where did Yehudah go when he separated himself from his brothers (Deut. 38:1)? Is Yehudah separated from the whole of Israel today? Does that mean the Yehudah be “left behind”?

In the prophecy of Eze. 37:15-28 about the melding of the “sticks” of Yehudah and Ephraim, will Yehudah be brought back to Ephraim or the other way around?

What do the Hebrew words tummim (thummim) and oorim (urim) mean? On what day of the year was the breastplate with two items with those names to be worn by the high priest of Israel (Ex. 28:29-30)?

What is the meaning of the cryptic passage Deut. 33:8-9? On what was the standing of the tribe of Levi as priest based? Without Levites among the people, what would have happened to the offerings of the people?
