Messiah is ‘faithful and righteous to forgive’ our leavened ‘malice and wickedness’

There’s ample reasons to stand in awe of Heaven’s love and mercy as we recall what when Heaven showed the Jail-keeper of humanity Who is boss that “Good Friday” and resurrection day two millennia ago. But we shouldn’t forget the enduring lessons about our salvation from the seven days of Unleavened Bread that surrounded ancient Israel’s deliverance in the Exodus and ours today.

Mad about matzah: Enlist Heaven in our eschewing leaven in our ‘new self’

The seven-day Chag Matzot (Festival of Unleavened bread) is an annual memorial of and spiritual reflection on our redemption, reformation and restoration into the Kingdom of God. Part of the lesson of purging out leaven during the festival is mastering the malice and wickedness that is beckoning us to open our heart’s door to them. Rather, we should let in Yeshua (Jesus) to our hearts and, thus, lives as He knocks.

How Heaven leads families from bondage to freedom (Exodus 21; Romans 6; Mark 10)

One of the key lessons from Torah portion מִּשְׁפָּטִים Mishpatim (Exodus 21–24) and from the Prophets and Gospels is that God and Messiah Yeshua (Christ Jesus) doesn’t separate religious and civil laws. The reasons for that are encapsulated in the Greatest Commandment and the Golden Rule — and in the Torah laws that restricted and ultimately abolished slavery.

The gospel according to Moses

Some may think that the gospel started with the Bible books named after it. But that good news of the Kingdom of Heaven long preceded — and prepared the way for — the arrival of Yeshua the Messiah (Jesus the Christ). In the Torah reading וארא Va’era (“I appeared,” Exodus 6:2–9:35), we see how Moses foreshadowed the gospel message and the work of the Messiah.

Trust the One Who lives up to His name (Exodus 3–4)

Genesis ended with the descent of Israel into slavery and Exodus shows us the ascent of Israel to freedom. God had made a promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and after several generations in Egypt.

In the Torah reading שמות Shemot (“names,” Exodus 1:1–6:1), God was making good on His promise to return His people to His Promised Land. Moses and Aaron would be His primary instruments to fulfill the promise, but there are other “saviors” we meet before God sends Moses to save His people: the daughter of Pharaoh, and Tzipporah, the daughter of Yitro (Jethro). 

God kept His promises to Israel in bondage, and because of that we can rest assured He will keep His promises to us. God is eternal, and so are His promises. Key to those promises is Messiah Yeshua (Christ Jesus). Shemot helps us remember that He will bring them to pass on His timetable.

Like Joseph, like Jesus: How the savior of ancient Egypt reveals the Savior of the world (Genesis 44–47)

The account of Yosef (Joseph) in Genesis 37–50 is key to unlocking the role of Israel and Messiah Yeshua (Christ Jesus) in the world and throughout the Bible. And the Torah reading ויגש Vayigash (“he approached,” Gen. 44:18–47:27) is pivotal point in his story.

Joseph and Judah: Great leaders must start as great servants (Genesis 37–40)

A key point in the Torah reading וַיֵּשֶׁב Vayeshev (Genesis 37–40) is the betrayal of Yosef (Joseph) by his brothers, including their debate about what to do with him and their sale of him to traders bound for Mitzraim (Egypt). This seems to parallel what happened many centuries later, when Messiah Yeshua (Christ Jesus) was rejected by His brothers (Israel, led by descendants of Judah) and went into exile in Mitzraim.
